Can anyone tell me how to get ones forum removed from search engines.

I have found this :

To prevent all robots from indexing a page on your site, place the following meta tag in the <HEAD> section of your page:
<meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow">

Could you tell me where the <HEAD> section is to be found?

It's the forum header Robert. You can edit it in the Admin panel. I have to tell you though that the nofollow isn't 100% reliable.

Correct. When editing you will have to add it to every template since each template has it's own header.

It is in site_header and can be put anywhere between the <head> and </head> tags

Not all search robots respect this or the robots.txt file. It only keeps out the honest ones.

You have no choice, unless you password protect the entire directory you will get crawled and listed by someone.

I dont mean this in a rude or disrespectful way.... Im just curious, so please only take this as such.

Why would someone not want to be listed on a search engine. I always thought that that was a good thing to help bring in members and to improve the popularity of your site.

If high membership numbers, or visitors, are what your forum or web site needs then search engines are indeed a good thing. I rely on them for increasing visitors to our founding web site but the forum is a different thing entirely. Ours is more of a club than a forum and like any club it has to adjust it's membership to what it can handle for the maximum benefit of it's members. In our case that means keeping the numbers down to a level that we are comfortable with.

Then just don't allow any new sign ups or ONLY allow people you approve to sign up, but Robert, overall you still want to be indexed by Google and the other search engines. Your site is a "club" now and that is wonderful, but even you don't know the direction you might take the forum in 1 year, 5 years, 10 years, etc. So why would you want to start over then when you will have all that time and indexed pages POSITIVELY already. Just make your forum private instead of stopping google indexing, which does no harm at all. Just my 2 cents.

It looks like I don't have too much choice in the matter as I have been checking and we are on at least a dozen search engines and there's no way of stopping them all. As you say TVDinner, where's the harm, and who knows we may even need them some day.
Thanks for your comments
