Is there any way of searching the forum with more than one word, i.e. wagon cleaning, that won't fetch results which include wagon and cleaning as well as wagon cleaning. I have tried "wagon cleaning" but that doesn't do the trick.

I'm sorry, the Ultra search feature is so far the same as the old wow search function. Detailed search is on the list but if you need something soon you might have to use one of the alternatives I've seen popping up here lately.

I tried a plus sign but it didn't work. Needs examining at the query level.

Hi Bob,

Good news. It seems that the Zoom Indexer can use the cookies in IE to gain access to restricted forums -- Google can't do that! Zoom search allows the multi-word phrase searching which you wanted (enclosed in quotes, e.g. "check rail").

So I have indexed your board as an experiment. Zoom found and indexed 4,285 topic pages and 32 other html pages, containing 69,272 unique words out of a total of 7,072,243 words indexed. Indexing took 82 minutes on my system and created 50MB of data files to upload.

Which means you can now try searching your board using Zoom, at:

  http://www.templot.com/odds/ymr/search_cgi.htm

(actually there are no results for the phrase "wagon cleaning")!

The best bit of Zoom is that you can have the topic pages automatically scroll down to the first relevant result and highlight it -- Google can't do that!

To make that work you need to make a small change in your theme template.

Go to Admin > Themes > Edit > Templates. In the site_header template, find these these two lines:

</head>
<body class="body" onload="more_init()" onmousedown="hide_menu(event)">

and replace them with these lines (copy and paste):

<style>.highlight { background: #FFFF33; }</style>
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.templot.com/odds/ymr/highlight.js"></script>
</head>
<body class="body" onload="more_init();highlight();" onmousedown="hide_menu(event)">

With Zoom you have in effect your own private version of Google, and everything can be customized to your requirements. The disadvantage of Zoom is that you have to buy it ($99 one-off), and run a regular indexing session to keep it up to date.

I have Zoom and can run an index for you occasionally and upload the data to my web space as I have done above, but ideally you would need your own copy and run your own indexing session every few days. Everything can be set up to run automatically in the background on your system.

Try the link above Bob, post it for your members, and see how they feel about it compared with the regular search. The automatic scrolling on the topic pages is a big help when you are trying to find things, so it would be best to set that up before posting the link. :cool:

Another useful feature of Zoom is that you can see what your members have been searching for, by going to:

  http://www.templot.com/odds/ymr/logs/searchwords.log

(Firefox displays that on the page, IE launches Notepad to display it.)

A new version of Zoom was released just before Christmas (version 6), which I have downloaded but not yet installed. It has some extra features -- the above indexing was done using Zoom 5.

p.s. I have no connection with Zoom, I'm just an ordinary user. If you decide to go ahead with Zoom, I can help you set it up if you want.

Happy New Year. :)

Martin.

Thanks for all that info Martin. I have been pm-ing around and it seems that very few people now use the Search facility. My query was made because I was looking for an article that had slipped by me when I was updating the Forum Index, which now contains many hundreds of items and covers everything on there. I won't go down the Zoom road because if I like it I wouldn't be able to go further and purchase, for the forseeable future, because we have been very badly hit by the currency exchange, euro/sterling. To the extent that horns are going to have to be pulled in everywhere. Not your problem though.
Once more I thank you for all the work you put in on my behalf Martin and wish you and yours a happy and healthy New Year.

No.1 look here : http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/draw%2Fpull+in+horns

No.2 A railway wagon. Actually the query should have read 'wagon weathering' but that's another story.
