Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought that symbols in usernames were already disabled in Ultra. I had a member register yesterday with the dreaded '&' in his name;

B&B BIKER BILL

It should have read B&B BIKER BILL

Some symbols so far have been disabled. The real fix would be to allow all, it will be addressed in the new version.

In the mean time I can fix that one for you-

 We get this happening a lot.  It's a pain in the  butt.
(Started a thread about it some time back - and linking to it here as it is relevant)

I'm still getting this problem, also with the \ symbol. I had a guy register with this name;

koreighsheigh\n but it shows up as koreighsheighn in the members profiles so I was unable to send him a PM and got a "check spelling" error message until I looked at his name in Admin panel and spotted the \ . Also I had another one register with Bill&DeeWingingIt and it shows as Bill&DeeWingingIt.

I can fix these and email the people concerned, the \ seems to be a new one and I wanted to let you guys know about it.

Well I just tested and you be right once again. I cured the & symbol problem along with about a dozen other symbols but that one still gives a problem.

Why anyone would want to use a backslash in their user name is beyond me but it does mess with the system.

Hi Jim,

Probably they didn't.  \n on the end of a line is the escape code for "new line". It's likely that the user name (without the \n) was copied and pasted from a text editor program.

regards,

Martin.

I suppose that's possible Martin, although it seems like a lot of bother for someone registering to type their forum name on a text editor and then copy & paste it into the forums registration page.

The whole routine is just wrong, there is a way to process it and preserve everything.

The apostrophe bugs me, it doesn't work because of the cookie believe it or not. The bright idea was to use the username in the cookie instead of a user ID or a session ID.

The backslash is being intentionally stripped from the names.

It's a bad routine and If I had the time I would start over. JimBB maybe.

It's been like a home improvement project thus far. As I add rooms and bathrooms and lights I run in to electrical wiring problems, plumbing problems, and a foundation that was built to carry the weight of the original house. It would take a lot of time to burn it down, claim the insurance money and rebuild it but it has been talked about.
